Georgia is losing its role in major regional initiatives, according to Zviad Chumburidze, Secretary General of the EU-Georgia Business Council (EUGBC). Speaking after the meeting of Georgian-Romanian business circles, Chumburidze stressed that political instability is undermining the country’s economic and strategic positioning.

“Romania is our strategic partner on the Black Sea. Despite the difficult political situation, we organized a business forum with our Romanian partners to discuss projects of vital importance. The Port of Constanta is our European gateway, and we must fully use this opportunity. Unfortunately, Georgia has fallen out of context in all important regional projects,” Chumburidze said.

He pointed to the Middle Corridor, the Black Sea submarine cable, fiber-optic projects, ferry traffic and crossings as areas where Georgia has become a passive participant, while neighboring countries like Azerbaijan and Armenia are taking the lead with Western partners.

“At a time when Georgia should be a flagship, we are becoming secondary in the region. This is an irreversible process if not addressed. I urge the ruling party to concentrate on strategic projects instead of political distractions,” Chumburidze emphasized.

To strengthen ties with Romania and the EU, Chumburidze called for activating Black Sea shipping, advancing the Middle Corridor, and boosting cooperation in tourism, production, and trade. He stressed that achieving this requires both political stability and a clear European vision.
