Georgia Needs 300 MLN Wine Bottles a Year, but Relies on Imports – Winemaker

ღვინო

Georgia’s wine industry remains heavily dependent on imported bottles, despite annual demand of around 300 million units, according to Otar Mumladze, head of Georgian Wine.

Speaking to BMG, Mumladze said bottle shortages and limited access to production equipment are among the biggest challenges facing winemakers. He called on the government to develop a long-term strategy to encourage local bottle manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports.

He also argued that Georgia has the capacity to produce some winery equipment domestically. Mumladze suggested that existing state-owned enterprises, including defense manufacturer Delta, could help manufacture equipment currently imported from countries such as Italy.

According to Geostat, Georgia imported glass bottles and other glass containers worth GEL 80 million in 2025, up from GEL 71.7 million in 2024. Mumladze said greater local production would keep more value within the country and strengthen the wine sector’s supply chain.
