According to Galt & Taggart’s electricity market review, domestic electricity consumption in July decreased by 4.1% year-on-year (YoY) to 1.2 TWh. Consumption declined across all segments:
- Abkhazia region: -7.4% YoY
- Direct consumers: -2.3% YoY
- Retail consumers: -4.1% YoY
The investment bank attributes the decline in consumption primarily to a relatively cooler summer. In addition, system-wide power outages made a smaller contribution to the decrease.
Galt & Taggart notes that three system-wide outages occurred in Georgia during July and August, resulting in electricity interruptions lasting several hours across most of the country. The causes of the outages remain unknown, and an investigation is underway.
“According to our estimates, the outages reduced electricity consumption by approximately 5 GWh in July, equivalent to 0.4% of the country’s total electricity consumption for the month.
Despite the decline recorded in July, domestic electricity consumption increased by 3.8% year-on-year during the first seven months of 2026, reaching 8.5 TWh,” the review states.
