Georgia plans to invest nearly GEL 2 billion in its railway system over the next three years to strengthen the country’s position as a reliable and competitive transport hub, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili announced at an event marking Railway Workers’ Day.
The procurement process has begun for around 50 new locomotives and 10 passenger trains. Meanwhile, the first 50 of 200 newly purchased freight wagons have already entered service.
Kvrivishvili also announced that the historic Borjomi–Bakuriani railway, known as the “Kukushka,” will resume operations in December. Rehabilitation works are nearing completion, with the restored train designed to preserve the route’s historic character and atmosphere.
The minister said the railway’s return would revive childhood memories for many passengers and introduce a unique part of Georgia’s railway heritage to a new generation.
