The Georgian Energy Exchange (GEX) plans to purchase trading platform services from Norwegian company Nord Pool AS for €1.4952 million. The contract will cover the period from October 1, 2026, to July 1, 2030, according to the exchange.
The purchase follows amendments to Georgia’s electricity market model approved by the government on September 8. Under the changes, the intraday electricity market is scheduled to be suspended from October 1, 2026, while the day-ahead market will continue operating. As a result, the scope and cost of Nord Pool’s services will be reduced, while access to the platform will continue beyond July 1, 2027.
The exchange’s current agreement with Nord Pool is valid until July 1, 2027. GEX said Nord Pool offered a lower fee if the contract is extended through July 1, 2030. The total purchase price includes €61,500 for consulting services and the potential future relaunch of the intraday market.
GEX said discontinuing the service could disrupt the day-ahead market, which is part of the exchange’s licensed activities. The existing platform is already adapted to Georgia’s electricity market, with more than 100 trading representatives registered and certified on it, and is integrated with settlement, risk-management and other operational systems. The exchange estimates that selecting and implementing an alternative platform could take more than a year and require changes to market rules and related systems, making continued use of the existing platform necessary for uninterrupted operations.
