Georgian Railway plans to purchase new locomotives, according to the company’s Director General, Lasha Abashidze, who announced the decision during his speech at the Silk Road Forum.

We have a shortage of rolling stock, especially in the locomotive sector. That is why we have decided not to continue repairing old locomotives and instead will completely renew the locomotive base,” Abashidze said.

The timeline for announcing a new tender has not yet been specified.

In March 2025, Georgian Railways signed a $114 million contract with Russian manufacturers for the overhaul of 47 outdated locomotives. However, following Abashidze’s appointment as Director General in May 2025, the company reduced the contract by $77 million, limiting the overhaul to 20 locomotives instead.
