Georgian wine rejected locally sells for GBP 900 in Europe – Khomlis Marani

თამაზ ომანაძე

The founder of “Khomlis Marani” says there are serious problems in Georgia’s wine tasting and evaluation system, arguing that expert capacity remains insufficient and underdeveloped.

According to Tamaz Omanadze, there was a case where a wine produced by his company was rejected by a Georgian tasting commission, while the same wine later sold for GBP 900 in a European market. He claims the export company itself verified the quality and set the final price abroad.

Omanadze argues that the state is overly focused on low-priced mass wine production, while neglecting investment in professional training and expertise. He suggests redirecting funds currently used for grape harvest subsidies toward education and development of qualified wine specialists.

He also stressed that professional sommeliers and top-level wine experts evaluate wines carefully over extended periods, unlike some local tasting practices where large numbers of samples are assessed in a short time.
