Georgia’s Democracy Stands At A Crossroads - Helsinki Commission New Chairman

როჯერ უიკერი

Republican Senator Roger Wicker has been appointed the new chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the U.S. Helsinki Commission.

For nearly fifty years, the Helsinki Commission has protected human rights, advanced democracy, and increased economic cooperation across the globe,” said Senator Wicker. “Today’s challenges are no less urgent. I look forward to working on a bicameral, bipartisan basis to seek a just end to Russia’s war on Ukraine, a stronger NATO alliance, and an international order that serves our national interest.”

The commission’s statement also highlighted concerns about Georgia’s democracy, stating that “the republic of Georgia’s democracy stands at a crossroads as the Georgian Dream party attempts to drag the country towards Russia and away from their chosen path of Euro-Atlantic integration.”

The chairmanship of the Helsinki Commission rotates every two years. Former chairman, Republican Congressman Joe Wilson, now serves as the commission’s co-chairman.
