In April 2025, Georgia's external debt increased by USD 309 million, - according to the report published by the Ministry of Finance. The statistics show, that the state's external debt reached USD 9 billion as of April 31, 2025. In addition, the debt increased by USD 138 million in March as well.

The main reason for the increase in debt is the currency composition of Georgia's public debt. The fact is that two-thirds of the debt is denominated in Euros, and the Euro has maintained a sharp strengthening trend over the past two months. Due to this, the volume of debt denominated in USD is also increasing.

In particular, in March, when calculating Georgia's external debt, the EUR-USD exchange rate stood at 3.07, while in April, 1 EUR was worth USD 1.14, which increased the balance of external debt in USD.

This is the sharpest increase in Georgia's external debt due to the exchange rate difference.

As for the composition of the debt, the Asian Development Bank ranks first in the external debt portfolio, with USD 2.38 billion. The World Bank is in second place with USD 2.17 billion, and the European Investment Bank is in third place with USD 1.16 billion.
