The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia says that, at this stage, it has not received any official information regarding the detention of Georgian citizens among the crew of the tanker "Marinera".
According to the ministry, in order to verify information circulating in open sources about the presence of Georgian citizens among the crew of the tanker detained by the United States in the Atlantic Ocean on January 7, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is carrying out relevant checks.
“To clarify information circulating in open sources regarding the presence of Georgian citizens among the crew of the tanker "Marinera", which was detained by the United States in the Atlantic Ocean on January 7, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia is undertaking appropriate measures. At this stage, the Ministry has not received information about the detention of Georgian citizens,” the Foreign Ministry said.
For information, according to reports by Russian media, the captain of the oil tanker sailing under the Russian flag and detained by the United States is a Georgian citizen. According to the same sources, the tanker’s crew consists of 28 people, of whom 20 are Ukrainian citizens, six are Georgian citizens (including the captain), and two are citizens of the Russian Federation.
As a reminder, the oil tanker "Marinera", sailing under the Russian flag and linked to Venezuela, was detained by the United States in the Atlantic Ocean on January 7.
