Vakhtang Gomelauri, Georgia’s Minister of Internal Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, has announced his resignation.
In a statement, Gomelauri cited the difficulty of his decision and reflected on his long service, which began in 2011, during which he played a key role in Georgia’s political developments led by Bidzina Ivanishvili. He expressed pride in the country’s achievements and reaffirmed his loyalty to the government team, stating he is ready to support the state if needed.
Having served as Minister of Internal Affairs, Head of the Security Service, and Vice Prime Minister, Gomelauri explained that with the country now stable, he wishes to focus on his family, including his wife, children, and new grandchild.
He expressed gratitude to Ivanishvili for his trust, as well as to Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and government colleagues for their support. He also thanked the Ministry’s personnel—police officers and firefighters—for their dedication, wishing them success in their future roles.
Gomelauri reaffirmed his loyalty to Georgia, wishing the nation peace and stability as he stepped down from his position.
“I would like to inform the public that I have made the difficult decision to resign from my position as Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia. This choice has not been easy for me to make. Since 2011, I have been an active participant in the movement led by Mr Bidzina Ivanishvili, which has ushered in pivotal turning points for our nation. All the achievements our country has attained under the leadership of our government team are a source of pride and deep gratitude for me. Therefore, I remain loyal to this team and its vision. In the future, if the need arises, I stand ready to support the state and the ruling team once again.
Over a decade, I have held the positions of Minister of Internal Affairs, Head of the State Security Service, and Vice Prime Minister. Serving in such high-ranking roles for so many years has been a demanding and energy-intensive journey. Today, with the country in a stable state, I have chosen to step down to dedicate more time to my family—my wife, children, and my newly born grandchild.
I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to Mr Bidzina Ivanishvili, whose trust in me granted me the opportunity to serve my country from the highest offices. His confidence and example inspired me to perform my duties conscientiously and to contribute to the strengthening of Georgia’s statehood.
I also extend my sincere appreciation to Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and the entire government team, whose unwavering support I have always felt. Their understanding of my decision is deeply appreciated.
A special thank you goes to every employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs—heroic police officers, firefighters, and all those who have worked tirelessly to ensure the security of our nation. I wish each of you and the future Minister success in your ongoing efforts.
I remain steadfastly loyal to my country and my team. I wish Georgia peace, stability, and the realization of all its aspirations.
With respect,
Police Colonel General Vakhtang Gomelauri.”
