Georgia’s State Security Service has launched an investigation into alleged sabotage and unauthorized access to a computer system after a government decree related to a Gazprom gas contract briefly appeared on the Government Administration’s website.

According to the State Security Service, the investigation was triggered after the Government Administration reported a suspected cyberattack and “manipulations” on its official site, allegedly aimed at spreading false information and harming Georgia’s state interests, including creating political and economic risks for the country.

The document in question, dated 25 December, concerned contractual details between Georgia and Gazprom. After its appearance, several media outlets and social media users circulated the information.

The State Security Service said it reacted immediately and recommended that media organizations and individuals refrain from further dissemination while the case is under review.

The investigation is underway under Articles 318 (Sabotage) and 284 (Unauthorized Access to a Computer System) of Georgia’s Criminal Code.
