Former Economy Minister Giorgi Kobulia says the parliamentary “price commission” was unjustified from the start and has produced no tangible results, calling the initiative ineffective.
Speaking to BM.GE, Kobulia argued that price monitoring already falls under the mandate of the Competition Agency and that creating an additional parliamentary body was unnecessary. He said no evidence of anti-competitive agreements or corruption in import channels has been found.
According to him, price differences between Georgia and Europe are mainly driven by structural factors such as smaller market size, lower volumes, and higher logistics costs, rather than manipulation. He added that even retail and wholesale coordination issues have not been identified as a major source of price inflation.
Kobulia urged the authorities to acknowledge the failure of the initiative and focus on more pressing economic priorities, calling planned consumer price platforms largely symbolic and ineffective in addressing real market conditions.
