A few days ago, locals protested construction of Namakhvani HPP cascade in the Rioni River Gorge. The cost of the project is 800 million USD.
Giorgi Abramishvili, Executive Director of the Georgian Renewable Energy Development Association told BM.GE, that government as well as the business lost an information campaign against opponents of hydropower plant. Locals must more accurate information on HPP.
Abramishvili notes, that investment projects delay will lead the country to serious problems on the background of the increased electricity consumption. It will cause Georgia’s more dependence on neighboring states.
“The government must spend more energy on providing correct information to the population. We have been actively working with the government in this regard. Steps have been taken, but more must be done to explain better to the population what benefits own renewable energy brings. Unfortunately, the government, as well as business lost information campaign. Improvements are needed in this regard," he said.
