The Georgian government has set up a coordination commission to address the surge in food prices, placing Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze at its helm. Approved at the latest cabinet meeting, the commission includes key ministers, the government administration, and the Competition Agency.
Administration Chief Levan Zhorjoliani said the Prime Minister stressed the need for deeper scrutiny of price hikes, many of which lack clear economic justification and burden consumers.
Kobakhidze highlighted that food prices in Georgia remain significantly higher than in Europe due to large markups by distributors and retailers.
He announced intensified work with market players, instructed law enforcement to investigate possible criminal elements in pricing practices, and said antimonopoly measures could be applied if needed, while also requesting Parliament to create a committee to further examine the issue.
