According to US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan, the government has a responsibility to guarantee that Georgia’s former president Mikheil Saakashvili’s human rights are protected, that he receives the medical and psychological care he needs, and that he has a fair trial.

In responding to a question concerning the Special Penitentiary Service’s release of Mikheil Saakashvili’s video footage, Kelly Degnan stated that the Saakashvili’s court hearing is underway and that the process should be carried out in line with basic human rights, privacy, and the right to a fair trial.

“The government has a responsibility to ensure that his human rights are respected, that he receives the medical care and psychological care he needs, and that he receives a fair trial. Fundamentally, that is the government’s responsibility. With a court hearing underway, those legal processes should continue, um, in accordance with basic human rights and the protection of privacy as well as the right to a fair trial,” Kelly Degnan told journalists.
