We are talking about the infection problems in hospitals for a long time, but until her resigning Tikaradze has never focused on it, - this is how health specialist Vakhtang Kaloyan responds to Ekaterine Tikaradze’s statement, noting that "patients die more often not from COVID-19, but from hospital infection".

Vakhtang Kaloyan says that infection in medical institutions is one of the systemic problems which has been highly revealed amid the COVID-Pandemic.

"We are raising this issue for a long time, but the Minister has never focused on it before her resigning and, most importantly, no steps have been taken to resolve this problem.

In general, the infection that a patient gets in a hospital is a challenge for all health care systems, and the weaker the system is, the greater the challenge becomes. This is a natural risk; however, the whole world is working to reduce this risk to a minimum. This is a systemic problem with us, which starts for healthcare sector, including agriculture and society. Infections most severely reveals itself in the ICUs," Vakhtang Kaloyan said.

According to him, the former minister's statement is unqualified, as the bacterial infection can affect anyone who gets to the hospital, regardless of their diagnosis.

"For example, people on artificial respiration have a 2.5% increased risk of getting hospital-acquired pneumonia. Consequently, her statement has nothing common with the medical science.

It is an attempt to shift systemic problems, which have accumulated over the years to the doctors and medical staff," Vakhtang Kaloyan said.
