The President of the National Bank of Georgia (NBG), Natia Turnava, confirmed that no application has yet been submitted for the establishment of “Imedi Bank”, responding to journalists’ questions about the plans of TV company Imedi to create a new bank.
Turnava emphasized that if such an application is received, it will be made public. She also rejected concerns that granting a license could facilitate sanctions violations in Georgia, calling such suggestions “speculation.”
Earlier, on February 27, new shareholders of Imedi announced that despite potential difficulties, several commercial banks expressed willingness to provide services to the TV company. They also stated plans to establish “Imedi Bank” within a few months, supported by sponsors and loyal partners.
This follows financial sanctions imposed by the UK on February 24 against Imedi and POSTV for spreading Russian propaganda. Turnava reiterated that granting a banking license in Georgia does not constitute a sanctions violation.
