I appeal to all political leaders to pause and listen to what the people of Georgia are asking you to do, European Union Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski said during his speech at the event dedicated to Europe Day.
According to the EU Ambassador, joining the EU requires strong political will and unwavering commitment to fulfilling the criteria, so unity, hard work and many compromises are needed, which is not easy, but possible.
"Today we celebrate Europe Day and we know that Georgia has never been so close to the European Union as it is now, and the European Union has never been so widely open to Georgia as it is now.
We have a long history of close and successful cooperation. The European Union has signed a comprehensive association agreement with Georgia, and Georgian citizens travel to Europe without a visa. The European Union is the largest trade partner of Georgia and the annual technical and financial support provided to Georgia exceeds 100 million euros.
But since June of last year, our cooperation has reached a new level. Georgia is now an EU enlargement country that has undertaken to align to EU values and norms in order to become a future member of the EU.
EU membership requires strong political will and an unwavering commitment to meeting the membership criteria. This requires unity, hard work and also a lot of compromise. It is not easy, but it is possible. In this amazing time for Georgia, this is also very important. I appeal to all political leaders to pause and listen to what the people of Georgia are asking you to do. Georgia should use this unique opportunity," he said.
