Businessman Temur Chkonia is astonished by the scale of corruption revealed by recent arrests of high-ranking officials. Speaking to journalists, he admitted: “I could not imagine that such a large corruption existed. From my experience and what I’ve seen, I never thought such sums of money could exist in Georgia, both for profit and for theft.”
Chkonia added that it remains unclear how far the investigations will reach. “I don’t know at what level this corruption will stop - whether it will reach the highest echelons of government or the millionaires in parliament,” he said.
The remarks come after the recent detentions of former officials on corruption charges, including former Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Koba Gabunia, as reported by the Investigative Service.
The businessman’s reaction reflects broader concern in Georgia’s business community over the extent of corruption uncovered in the public sector.
