I Will Not Seek a Second Term – Bar Chair Candidate Chomakhashvili

ირაკლი ჩომახაშვილი

Irakli Chomakhashvili, a candidate for the chairmanship of the Georgian Bar Association, says that if elected, he will serve only one term and will not seek re-election. He made the statement on BMGTV’s program "Tsentili".

“All chairmen stayed for 8 years, and we see the results. People fall into a comfort zone. Four years are enough to implement reforms and leave space for someone else to continue,” Chomakhashvili said.

He expressed confidence that lawyers will support change in the second round of elections on December 21 and called for unity, noting that he already has the backing of the SIFA team and Mukhran Ghurtskaya’s supporters. According to him, coalition cooperation has no alternative and has already strengthened the legitimacy of the election process.

Commenting on working with an Executive Board largely made up of his opponent’s team, Chomakhashvili said this ensures balance and prevents one-person rule. “If everything is under my control, that would be a dictatorship. Checks and balances are necessary,” he noted.

Responding to accusations of political bias, Chomakhashvili stressed that a lawyer must not be identified with their client and that defending rights is a professional duty regardless of political context.

The second round of the Bar Association elections will take place on December 21 at Expo Georgia, where lawyers will choose between Irakli Chomakhashvili and Irakli Kandashvili.
