If the law is adopted in its current form, Germany will not support the opening of negotiations with the EU for Georgia - German Ambassador

You have to meet the standard, otherwise you won't be able to get closer to the European Union, - German Ambassador to Georgia Peter Fischer said in a conversation with journalists.

According to the German ambassador, the draft law "On transparency of foreign influence" is below the standard that the candidate country must meet, which means that if the draft law is adopted in its current form, Germany will not support the opening of negotiations with the European Union.

"This is a dynamic process. I can talk about Georgia's path to the European Union. I am sure you have seen the statement of the Chancellor of Germany and the President of France, who said that by adopting this law in the third reading, Georgia has already deviated from the European path.

There is a standard that candidate countries must meet, and this law falls below that standard. So, when we talk about the meeting of the European Council in December, if this law is adopted in its current form, Germany will not support the opening of accession negotiations [for Georgia], and this will push Georgia back on its European integration path.

You have to meet the standard, otherwise you won't be able to get closer to the European Union," said Fisher.

According to him, the decision to open negotiations will be made with the support of the full majority of EU countries, therefore, if the law is adopted in its current form, Germany will not be able to give its consent.

"I represent Germany. We are one state in the European Union. It turned out that we have the largest population and so on. In order for the European Union to decide the next step for Georgia - that is, to open accession negotiations - there must be unanimity, all states must express their consent. On behalf of Germany, I can tell you that we will not agree if this law is adopted in its current form," he added.
