Ilia Injia Pushes for State Bank to Support The Country's Sovereignty

ილია ინჯია

Parliamentary political group European Socialists has proposed the creation of a state bank, an initiative presented by party leader Ilia Injia during the spring plenary session. Injia emphasized that establishing a state bank would reinforce national sovereignty and simplify regulations in key social areas, particularly those impacting citizens’ daily lives.

According to Injia, the state bank would play a critical role in managing the banking system and interest rates, which directly influence price formation in the economy. He stressed that work to reduce prices should begin promptly, but must not compromise product quality.

Injia noted that further details on price formation and the banking sector’s involvement will be revealed following the work of the relevant commission. The initiative aligns with ongoing governmental efforts to monitor and regulate prices across sectors.

Georgia’s government has been actively addressing high product prices since January. The first coordination meeting of the Price Commission, led by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, was held on January 20. Subsequent meetings involved supermarkets, distributors, and producers, including visits by the State Security Service and the Finance Ministry’s investigative unit to document price practices. Meetings with fuel companies concluded the month’s sessions.
