Import duty on wheat flour is enacted from Monday. The Government of Georgia published the relevant resolution on June 7, 2023. According to the document, the importer will have to pay 20 tetri for each kilogram, which equals GEL 200 for each ton (if wheat flour exceeds 200 kg). The customs duty on import will be valid until November 1.
The Government of Georgia decided to impose a temporary customs duty on import of wheat flour to support increasing the competitiveness of domestic producers and promote their sales on the local market.
Along with the implementation of the import tax, the mills will be obliged to buy wheat from local farmers at a specific price and to supply the bread manufacturers with first-quality flour under such conditions that this does not cause bread price rise.
Russia is the main supplier of both wheat and flour for Georgia. Due to the tariff imposed on the export of wheat to the main import market, it became unprofitable for Georgian importers to import and process Russian wheat.
