As a result of investigative activities carried out by Investigation Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia, in coordination with the representatives of the Customs Department of the Revenue Service, the fact of importing particularly large amount of undeclared goods through the customs border of Georgia with violation of customs rules was exposed, for which one person was detained.
Investigation determined, that the accused person, through the customs checkpoint “Sarpi” with a specially arranged hiding place in the cabin of the bus under his control, hidden from customs control, imported undeclared, especially large amounts of precious metal jewelry to Georgia.
At this stage of the investigation, more than 5 kilograms of gold products were found in the bus and seized, with an estimated value of GEL 535,000.
Appropriate investigative activities are being carried out in order to discover other possible hiding places in the bus and to seize additional smuggled jewelry.
Investigation is underway under the 2nd part of article 214 of Criminal Code of Georgia, which envisages imprisonment from 5 to 7 years.
