"Foreign investors, who want to invest in Georgia, know very well that they are not coming to a normal country, where institutions exist and the court will protect their rights" - economist Soso Berikashvili spoke about this while visiting TV-program Analytics.
According to Berikashvili, the main problem that hinders the inflow of foreign investments is the existing corruption system in the country.
He notes, that investors coming to Georgia know very well that the main prerequisite for starting a business here is close relations with the government.
In addition, the economist says, that small-scale investments are made in the country, which the government does not control, while the problems mentioned above mainly affect large investments.
The economist also notes that corruption in Georgia is a vicious circle that can only be broken through mental changes.
"The main problem of corruption is that both parties in the corrupt deals are satisfied, and the conditions are favorable for both parties. That is why it is difficult to break this circle. It is important to change everything to solve the problem. Government, business and people should perceive these processes differently, mental changes are needed. This is very difficult", said economist Soso Berikashvili.
As of 1Q2023, FDI of USD 496 million entered Georgia, which was USD 80 million less compared to the same period of the previous year.
