Irakli Lekvinadze: No Need for Additional Anti-Dumping Tariffs on Rebar Imports

Chairman of the Georgian Competition and Consumer Protection Agency, Irakli Lekvinadze, says there is currently no need to impose additional anti-dumping tariffs on rebar imports, as an existing protective tariff is already supporting the local industry.

Speaking to BMG, Lekvinadze noted that the agency has completed its study of the rebar market, which began in the summer of 2024. “Regarding dumping, we have practically completed the study of the rebar market and concluded that at this stage, it is not appropriate to apply a new tariff, since a protective tariff is already in effect in the country, which significantly helps the local industry. Therefore, there is no need to introduce additional anti-dumping tariffs in this regard,” he stated.

The Georgian government introduced a special import tariff of GEL 400 per ton on rebar at the end of 2024, following a sharp rise in imports, particularly from Iran. According to official data, in the first nine months of 2025, Georgia imported 181,000 tons of rebar worth USD 102 million, down from 248,000 tons worth USD 143 million in the same period of 2024.

Lekvinadze highlighted that the tariff has already produced visible effects: “If we look at the indicators of the local industry before and after the tariff, it’s clear that this measure has had a positive impact,” he said. Turkey remains Georgia’s leading supplier of rebar, accounting for USD 68 million worth of imports in the first nine months of 2025.
