It Is Unthinkable for a Normal Person to Participate in the Elections – Gastroculture Development Association

A growing number of representatives from Georgia’s hospitality sector have declared a boycott of the upcoming local elections, citing political dissatisfaction and concerns over the country’s democratic direction.

The announcement was made via a joint statement posted on social media, where signatories expressed their support for Georgia’s European path and opposition to the current government.

“We are joining the boycott of the local elections because we want Georgia in Europe, and we believe that the European future of this country cannot be achieved through cooperation with the regime. We call for unity! No to the Russian regime! No to Russian elections!” the statement reads.

Among the signatories is Tamar Sikharulidze, founder and chairwoman of the Gastronomic Culture Development Association, who said that the boycott is a response to the political and legislative climate in Georgia.

“In the conditions the country is in now and the laws they are passing, it is unthinkable for a normal person to participate in the elections,” Sikharulidze told bm.ge.
“This is a spontaneous statement. More people will join us because there is a large number of individuals who support this decision,” she added.

The statement reflects broader discontent in civil society, particularly among professionals who view recent developments as a threat to democratic values and Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
