Former Georgian Dream MP and former penitentiary minister Kakha Kakhishvili said the explanation provided by the Georgian State Electrosystem (GSE) regarding the nationwide power outage has raised more questions instead of answering existing ones.
According to Kakhishvili, the repeated failures of the country’s energy system are no longer just a matter of inconvenience. He said the public has the right to receive comprehensive answers about what caused the outages and what conclusions will be reached through a full investigation.
Kakhishvili said there are two possible explanations: either those responsible for managing the energy system lack sufficient professionalism and have allowed another large-scale failure, or someone is deliberately damaging Georgia’s reputation and economy. He noted that international media have repeatedly shown images of a blackout in Georgia, including halted trains, metro disruptions, and traffic problems.
Commenting on GSE’s statement that the latest outage was linked to technical work and system testing, Kakhishvili questioned why such a process could leave almost the entire country without electricity and why backup systems or public warnings were not provided. He called for transparent and professional answers from the authorities.
Georgia has experienced three major power outages within two weeks. The Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC) and the State Security Service are investigating the causes of the July 24–25 blackouts, while officials said the August 5 outage was connected to testing aimed at identifying the reasons behind the previous failures.
