Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze criticized EU Ambassador Pawel Herczynski, saying that the ambassador is “doing everything except diplomacy” and is interfering in Georgia’s domestic political affairs. Kaladze made the remarks live on TV Imedi while responding to Herczynski’s recent statement.
A few days earlier, Ambassador Herczynski warned: “We cannot allow Georgia and the wonderful, warm, hospitable Georgian people to return to the dark times of violence, civil war, poverty, hardship, and corruption.”
Kaladze called the ambassador’s comments “unimaginable,” saying this was not the first time Herczynski had crossed diplomatic boundaries. According to him, during the parliamentary elections the ambassador openly encouraged support for the opposition, which he considers unacceptable for a diplomat.
“He is here on a diplomatic mission, yet he is doing everything except diplomacy. He directly interferes in domestic political matters,” Kaladze said.
“His latest statement was very serious - he predicted internal confrontation and a return to the dark past. There is peace and stability in the country; our economy is moving forward.”
Kaladze further argued that certain foreign actors want to bring their “agents” to power in Georgia - people who, he said, would follow any external instructions. He insisted that Georgia must be governed by a government chosen by its own citizens, not by “agents placed from outside.”
