Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said the city is beginning a project that will “write a new page” in Tbilisi’s transport history, as the municipality signed a contract with Turkish joint venture EYE for the design and construction of a new tram line.

Kaladze said the project fulfills a commitment made to Tbilisi residents, while acknowledging that construction will cause temporary disruptions. He pledged to keep residents informed about traffic changes and construction works and to take steps to minimize inconvenience.

The Tbilisi tram project will connect Didi Digomi and Didube with a 7.5-kilometer line and include the construction of a tram depot. EYE won the tender to carry out the project.

The project will be implemented under a Design-Build model, placing both design and construction responsibilities with one contractor. The completion period is set at 36 months.
