Sergi Kapanadze, head of the Georgian Reform Association, warns that the suspension of Georgia’s visa-free travel to the EU is becoming inevitable due to continued democratic backsliding under the current government.

In an interview with BM.GE, Kapanadze criticized the Georgian Dream party for obstructing EU efforts and ignoring repeated warnings.

“Nothing has improved since last year. The EU has no other tool left but to suspend visa-free travel,” he said, adding that “there are no signs of improvement under the current regime.”

Last week, EU foreign policy chief Kaia Kallas confirmed the EU will send a letter to Georgia listing conditions for keeping visa-free travel, including repealing the “Russian law”, protecting fundamental rights, and ensuring judicial independence.

If the conditions are not met, the EU warns the visa-free regime may be revoked.
