Khachapuri Index's Downward Trend Continues

ხაჭაპური

International School of Economics at TSU (ISET) published Khachapuri Index. According to the ISET, the average cost of cooking one standard portion of Imeretian khachapuri was 5.83 GEL in May 2024. Continuing the month-on-month downward trend, the price of khachapuri fell by 6.5% compared to April 2024. However, there is still a year-on-year increase of 1.3% compared to May 2023.

Annually, the Khachapuri Index rose in Tbilisi, Telavi, and Kutaisi, while it decreased in Batumi. Tbilisi is currently one of the most expensive markets for khachapuri ingredients, with the cost of cooking one standard Imeretian khachapuri standing at 6.47 GEL, 11% above the national average. In contrast, Kutaisi is the cheapest location, with a single khachapuri costing 4.91 GEL. The price difference between the most expensive city (Tbilisi) and the cheapest one (Kutaisi) is 1.56 GEL.

On a month-on-month basis, the Index declined in most Georgian cities except Batumi, with the largest drop of 15.5% in Kutaisi. This decrease aligns with traditional seasonal trends in fresh milk production. Seasonal fluctuations in cheese prices are consistently more pronounced in Kutaisi than in other parts of Georgia, likely because Imereti is the largest milk-producing region in the country, leading to price drops when the milk production season begins.
