Governor of National Bank of Georgia (NBG), Koba Gvenetadze paid the visit to the Parliament of Georgia and made the statement at the plenary session. During his speech Gvenetadze touched upon the TBC Bank Case, as well as the new bank regulations.

NBG President was repeatedly asked by MPs whether the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia righteously started the investigation according to the article on money laundering. To this Gvenetadze responded that this is not his competence.

NBG President stated that former chair of TBC Bank’s supervisory board, Mamuka Khazaradze was asking the NBG for the letter where it would say whether there was a money laundering during the transactions that are being investigated.

“I told him that we do not have such mandate and that we cannot give him such letter, as we don’t have the legal right to do that. Our interest here was not to violate the conflict of interests”, stated Gvenetadze.

On February 13, National Bank of Georgia requested to seize the signatures of chair and deputy chair of supervisory board, Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze, which has afterwards led to their resignation on April 3rd. According to Gvenetadze, TBC is not the only bank against which such measures where taken.

“There was the case when the signatures of entire management and supervisory board were seized in one of the systemic banks”, stated Gvenetadze.
Gvenetadze stated during the speech that he was warning TBC Bank a year before the decision was being made.

During his speech Gvenetadze also accused Khazaradze of lying when he stated that National Bank of Georgia has mandated TBC to cease operations in just one day.
