Kobakhidze: "The German Chancellor was an exceptional case, with whom we were limited only to greetings"

GD Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze says that during the European Political Community Summit in Denmark, he did not hold discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, noting that their interaction was limited to a simple greeting.

“The German Chancellor was an exceptional case, with whom we limited ourselves only to greetings. The format of the meeting in Denmark is closed and very free, you meet people at dinner, during breaks, or while sitting next to them. I cannot give details, but I will not hide the fact that we only exchanged a nice greeting and nothing more,” Kobakhidze said.

Asked whether the strained atmosphere around the German Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, affected his communication with Chancellor Merz, GD Prime Minister denied any link. “No, nothing has been done to prevent this. What is happening around the German ambassador is very tragic. He openly supports Khazaradze and his party, which does not comply with diplomatic standards. However, this has nothing to do with my communication with Mr. Merz. We remain open to dialogue,” Kobakhidze explained.

According to GD Prime Minister, Georgia’s delegation held conversations with around 30 European leaders during the summit. He highlighted that a number of high-level officials, including French President Emmanuel Macron and European Council President Charles Michel, expressed interest in “resetting relations” between Georgia and the European Union. “A general desire was expressed to restart dialogue. Of course, this requires steps from both sides, and we once again expressed our readiness for fact-based discussions on all issues related to Georgia’s European integration,” Kobakhidze said.
