The Armenian government has approved today an updated version of a strategy designed to enhance the energy sector until 2040.
According to Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Vache Terteryan, the amendments reflects real processes in this sector. He said the interest in the development of solar energy has increased after the government abandoned in 2022 the obligation to buy electricity at a fixed cost and liberalized the market.
According to the updated version, by 2040 Armenia is to have 2000 MW of renewable energy sources, twice as much as was set in the previous version. Moreover, according to Terteryan, Armenia will be able to achieve these figures only through solar energy, without taking into account the wind energy, which is also gaining popularity.
The strategy also stipulates that by 2030, 50% of the electricity produced and consumed is to come from renewable sources, and by 2040 this figure is to grow to 60%.
According to the National Statistical Committee of Armenia, in the first 8 months of 2023, some 5.9 billion kWh was produced, up from more than 5.86 billion kWh in the same period of 2022.
TPPs accounted for 53% (over 2.67 billion kWh), followed by HPPs - 23.3% (almost 1.26 billion kWh), and the NPP - 15.4% (about 1.5 billion kWh). Solar power plants produced over 8.9% (538.0 1 million kWh), and wind power plants 0.02% (1.3 million kWh), ARKA reports.
