Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin is warning the Russian capital is facing an uphill struggle in its efforts to contain the Covid-19 epidemic as the city registers a new daily high for deaths today.
"The situation with the coronavirus in Moscow remains extremely difficult," the Tass news agency quotes Sobyanin as saying.
"Over the past week, we have broken new records in the number of hospitalisations and people in intensive care, as well as in the number of deaths from the coronavirus," he adds.
Moscow has registered 7,246 new cases and a record number of 124 daily coronavirus deaths.
Sobyanin notes the Delta variant is a serious threat to the capital: "Once again, we are dealing with a new and more contagious strain, a very deadly one. I ask everyone to take care of themselves and get vaccinated at the first opportunity."
In a recent interview with state Rossiya 1 TV, the mayor says because of the Delta strain, the capital is "experiencing the pandemic anew, and the epidemic is in fact raging in Moscow".
