The National Bank of Georgia's (NBG) policy has always been focused on accumulating international reserves, First Vice Governor Ekaterine Mikabadze said while commenting on the country's record-high level of reserves.

As of July 2026, Georgia's international reserves reached a historic high of $7.53 billion, approximately 50% higher than in the same period last year.

According to Mikabadze, the record level of reserves is the result of the central bank's consistent policy. She said that whenever conditions in the foreign exchange market are favorable, the National Bank increases international reserves to strengthen the country's buffer against external shocks.

"The National Bank of Georgia's policy has always been aimed at building reserves, as international reserves are one of the key guarantees of the country's macroeconomic stability. Therefore, when conditions in the foreign exchange market are favorable, the National Bank consistently replenishes the country's international reserves," Mikabadze said.

She added that, alongside the increase in reserves, reserve adequacy indicators have also improved significantly. According to the latest assessment, the International Monetary Fund's Assessing Reserve Adequacy (ARA) metric stands at 118.7%.

Mikabadze also noted that the National Bank continues to actively diversify its reserve assets. In June 2026, the NBG purchased an additional $100 million worth of monetary gold, bringing gold's share in Georgia's international reserves to 13.5%.

During the first six months of 2026, amid favorable conditions in the foreign exchange market, the National Bank increased its international reserves by a net $2.08 billion through foreign currency purchases. The NBG is scheduled to publish updated reserve data on September 7, 2026.
