A petition calling for the cancellation of mandatory school uniforms has gathered nearly 10,000 signatures on Manifest.ge. Addressed to the Ministry of Education, it calls for parents and students to have the right to choose whether to wear a uniform, as long as school dress-code rules are followed.
The petition argues that uniforms do not guarantee better education or social equality and can create additional costs for families. It also says younger children need comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement.
According to the petition, schools could maintain a unified appearance by offering several optional clothing choices rather than imposing a mandatory uniform. “We are not asking for school uniforms to be banned. We are asking for the right to choose,” the authors state.
This academic year is the first in which uniforms are mandatory for primary school students. Sales began on September 1, while uniforms are provided free of charge to socially vulnerable families and several other eligible groups.
