New road to Gudauri will open in 2025

A 5-km road section, a part of the new Kvesheti-Kobi road connecting to Gudauri, will be opened in 2025, - accoridng to the Roads Department of Georgia.

The Kvesheti-Kobi highway includes the construction of a 23-kilometer road. The first of them is Lot 1 - that is, a tunnel section, the length of which is 9 kilometers. Its construction costs 909 million GEL. The project is being implemented by China Railway Tunnel group Co. The construction of the 9-kilometer tunnel was completed in 2024. According to the Roads Department, the progress on this section is 79%.

The second lot is 12.7 kilometers long and its construction costs 316.7 million GEL. This section of the road includes the construction of 5 bridges and 4 tunnels, as well as the rehabilitation of 1 bridge. The tunnels are (1541 m, 194 m, 388 m and 299 m). The total length of the bridges on this section is 1.6 km, one of which will be 426 m long, with an arch height of 166 m, which will be the highest bridge in the country. The project also provides the construction of bridges of 322, 218, 148 and 42 m. This section of the road is being built by China Railway 23rd Bureau Group and its progress is currently 50%.

BMG asked the Roads Department when the Kvesheti-Kobi highway will be fully opened, however, the department's response states that the access road to Gudauri will be opened in 2025, while the department's response does not indicate when the 23-kilometer highway will be fully opened.
