From April 1, electronic prescriptions for psychotropic medications in Georgia will follow updated regulations. Adults will be prescribed a maximum 14-day supply, while minors can receive up to 30 days. Refills are allowed only when the patient has five days or less remaining.
Daily doses must not exceed the maximum limits specified in the medication instructions, and any prescription must be justified based on the patient’s medical history. The rules also cover situations where medications are lost, damaged, or destroyed.
The changes aim to prevent previous violations where psychotropic drugs were prescribed without proper justification, diagnostics, or consultation, sometimes in excessive doses or by unauthorized practitioners. The Professional Development Council has already held 10 medical professionals accountable for such breaches.
The Ministry of Health emphasizes that strengthening oversight of psychotropic drug prescriptions remains a top priority to reduce risks and ensure safe medical practice.
