The change of leadership at the Georgian State Electrosystem (GSE) came as a surprise to the energy sector, according to Giorgi Margebadze, head of the Small and Medium HPP Association. Speaking to BMG, he described Vano Zardiashvili as a strong, results-oriented manager focused on solving industry challenges.

Margebadze said he does not know the exact reason behind Zardiashvili’s departure and noted that the sector was not involved in the decision-making process. He also rejected speculation that the move could be linked to recent large-scale power outages, saying he had no information on the matter.

“I truly have no idea why he was removed or replaced. Everyone was surprised. In my opinion, he was a very good and business-oriented leader. He restarted several stalled projects, including the construction of substations, and optimized project budgets,” Margebadze said.

He wished success to the incoming GSE director, while highlighting the major challenges ahead, including grid modernization, timely implementation of the 10-year development plan, rehabilitation of existing networks, construction of new infrastructure, and resolving connection-related issues in the energy sector. According to BMG’s information, Zardiashvili submitted his resignation on August 31 and is currently officially on leave. He is expected to be replaced by Davit Vardiashvili, the current director of the Georgian Gas Transportation Company.
