In September 2020, the number of beneficiaries of subsistence benefit reached a 7-year high. As of September, 502,258 people already receive monthly assistance from the state, which is 13.5% of the Georgian population.
The highest number of beneficiaries was recorded in early 2013, when 506,245 persons received the allowance, which was 11.3% of the total population. These are the official statistics published by the Social Services Agency on a monthly basis.
However, minimum amount set by the state (60 GEL per person in a month) is often the only income for 140 thousand families living in Georgia.
In the last year, the number of beneficiaries has increased by 17% compared to September of the previous year.
According to the statistics, state budget has the most beneficiaries in Tbilisi - 106 thousand people. 9.5% of the total population receives the allowance in the capital, however the poorest region is Racha-Lechkhumi, where 43% of the population depends on subsistence benefit.
