Givi Targamadze, a prominent opposition politician in Georgia, has been sentenced to 7 months in prison for failing to comply with a request from the temporary investigative commission of the Georgian Parliament.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Nino Galustashvili, who also ruled that Targamadze be barred from holding public office for a period of two years.
Targamadze did not attend the court session and was not granted the right to deliver a final statement.
The case stems from an incident on April 3, when Targamadze failed to appear before the parliamentary commission after being summoned to provide an explanation. As a result, he was charged under Article 349 of the Criminal Code, which covers non-compliance with the request of a parliamentary investigative commission, an offense punishable by a fine, up to one year in prison, or temporary disqualification from public service.
Following the charge, the court initially imposed a 10,000 GEL bail as a preventive measure, which Targamadze paid within the legal deadline.
