Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili says that, following an agreement with major retail chains, competition will intensify to offer the lowest possible prices on selected essential goods. According to him, this will create sustained downward pressure on prices rather than short-term promotional discounts.
Papuashvili explained that large retail networks, which account for the majority of the market, have agreed to maintain a defined list of basic products at consistently low prices. He said these will not be temporary “campaign offers,” but permanent pricing commitments that consumers can rely on.
He added that the initiative ensures price transparency, as shoppers will know that key items will be available at the lowest market price across all participating chains on a continuous basis. The aim, he said, is to improve affordability of essential goods for households.
Retail industry representatives, however, have noted that the current “social basket” discounts introduced across chains remain largely short-term, while government officials emphasize the need to expand the list of products and ensure longer-term pricing stability.
