Parliament Approved Composition of Friendship Groups - Baltic States Is Excluded Form The Group

On June 9, the Bureau of the Parliament of Georgia approved the updated composition of parliamentary friendship groups with legislatures of various countries, as stipulated by an earlier resolution. However, an exception was made for the Baltic states — Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia — due to an apparent lack of interest among Georgian MPs.

Despite the political decision to establish friendship groups with all three Baltic countries, not a single MP volunteered to join these specific groups.

Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili attributed this absence to what he described as the “unfriendly policy” of the Baltic countries toward Georgia.

“We hope that the parliaments of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia will return to a friendly policy toward the Georgian people. That would allow us to move forward with forming the relevant friendship groups,” Papuashvili stated.

He emphasized that while the structural decision to create the groups was in place, the lack of participation from MPs effectively left the groups unformed.

“As long as the parliaments of these three countries maintain an unfriendly stance toward Georgia, it is difficult to expect enthusiasm from Georgian MPs to engage in these formats,” he added.

Papuashvili concluded by calling on the Baltic parliaments to reconsider their positions and return to a constructive dialogue within the friendship group framework.
