Penalties for Violation of Traffic Rules Amounted Around US$ 70 Million in Azerbaijan

In 2020, the number of administrative violations of traffic rules in Azerbaijan was 3631,1 thousand. Penalties in the amount of US$69,529,411 (118,2 million manats) were applied because of a violation of traffic rules. Exceeding speed is the most common violation conducted by drivers. 
 
According to the State Statistical Committee of Azerbaijan, 39,9% of violations were detected on exceeding the speed on the road, 21,7% - a violation of the parking or stopping rules, 9,2% - disobedience the requirements of the traffic and road signs, 8,4% - continue the movement during the traffic light or the regulator’s warning sign is active, 6,5% - driving without a seat belt, 3,6% - a violation of the anti-epidemic regime, sanitary and quarantine regimes and the rest by other reasons. Penalties in the amount of US$69,529,411 (118,2 million manats) were applied because of a violation of traffic rules.
 
1587 or 15,1% fewer traffic accidents occurred in Azerbaijan during 2020 in comparison with 2019, the number of victims decreased by 16,5% to 2106 persons. 696 suffered persons died and 1410 of them were injured. 42,6% of accidents happened in the daytime, 35,0% - at night time, 22,4% - during twilight, 28,9% of accidents occurred on Saturdays and Sundays.
 
88,5% of traffic accidents happened in settlements; the number of casualties compared with 2019 decreased by 6,7% and made 526 persons, the number of injured persons decreased by 19,4% and made 1315 persons.
 
41,8% of all traffic accidents happened with participation of transport means and pedestrians, 35,4% - several transport means, 22,8% - one mode of transport.
 
81,2% of persons died and 75,0% of injured as a result of traffic accidents were men.
 
21 accidents occurred because of drunk driving and caused death or injury, where 14 persons died, 19 persons injured. 76,2% of accidents have been committed by drivers of motor-cars.
