Pistachio production in Georgia is growing steadily, but the market value of the product is falling, according to Otar Anguridze, Chairman of the Georgian Pistachio Association.

Official data show that in JanuaryAugust 2025, Georgia imported 4,779 tons of pistachios worth USD 38 million, marking a 44.2% increase in volume and a 117% increase in value compared to the same period last year. The United States remains the main supplier with 2,948 tons worth USD 25 million, followed by Turkey (USD 11.9 million; 1,298 tons) and Iran (USD 464,000; 463 tons).

Despite strong imports, local production is also growing. “A few years ago, there was almost no local pistachio production. Now, yields are rising every year,” said Anguridze, noting that pistachios are increasingly used in culinary products such as ice-cream and desserts.

However, prices have dropped from 50–60 GEL per kilogram in previous years to 40–50 GEL in 2025. “A lot has already arrived from abroad, and locally produced pistachios are also added to the supply,” he explained.

The number of pistachio orchards has also grown significantly, supported by both state programs and private initiatives. The Kakheti region leads production, with favorable climate and soil conditions, followed by Kvemo Kartli and parts of Shida Kartli.

According to Anguridze, Georgia’s soil and irrigation water give pistachios a distinct flavor and quality, providing strong potential for future exports.
