Political Decision on University Merger Already Made – Zviad Gabisonia

ზვიად გაბისონია

Deputy Minister of Education Zviad Gabisonia stated that the merger between Tbilisi State University (TSU) and the Technical University has already been politically decided and cannot be reconsidered.

Answering whether the decision could change, Gabisonia said, “I cannot revise political decisions; the reorganization decision has already been made. This concerns institutional decisions requiring government approval, not individual faculty matters.”

He added that ministry representatives have already met with the Technical University leadership and will meet with TSU leadership today to discuss the merger. These meetings, lasting several hours, focus on exploring the direction of the integration process.

At the end of January, it was announced that the ruling party “Georgian Dream” plans to merge TSU and the Technical University. Both universities’ rectors have reportedly agreed to the plan, which followed extensive consultations and comparative analyses of academic programs, research directions, and infrastructure. Meanwhile, TSU’s academic community has formally requested parliamentary and government representatives to hold public discussions with the Technical University community before the parliamentary hearings.
