Labor shortages, poor road infrastructure and limited access to vineyard supplies are among the main challenges facing small wineries in Georgia’s Lechkhumi region, according to Miranda Chkhetiani, founder of Miranda’s Wine.
Speaking on BMGTV’s Women’s Narrative, Chkhetiani said the region has significant potential for ecotourism and gastronomic tourism, but infrastructure problems are holding back business development. Population outflows from rural areas have made it difficult to find workers, while essential vineyard materials often have to be brought in from cities because local suppliers are limited.
Poor roads also complicate visits to the winery. Although it is located about one kilometer from the village center, the condition of the road makes access difficult for tourist vehicles. Chkhetiani said some sections have been repaired, but other stretches remain in poor condition despite promises from local authorities to complete the work.
She believes Lechkhumi and neighboring Racha have strong tourism potential thanks to their natural landscapes, pristine environment, wine and local cuisine. Hosting visitors provides an additional source of income for the winery, but improving rural roads and access to essential business resources is crucial to unlocking the region’s potential.
